The Answer May Surprise You
Video Transcribed: Could you be required to take educational programs when going through a divorce in the State of Oklahoma? Hi, my name is Brian Glass, and I am an attorney in Grady county. And clients often ask me, is it a requirement to take parenting classes when going through a divorce? And the answer is yes.
Oklahoma courts will require petitioner and respondent to take court-ordered educational programs for parents of minor children. These parenting classes address six topics.
The first of these topics is divorce’s short-term and long-term effects on a child’s well-being. The second one is the possibility of reconciliation as an optional outcome. Number three is the effects of family violence on minor children.
Number four would be the potential child behaviors and emotional developments that may occur during the process of divorce. Also, they’ll give you tips on how to address these and be there for the child during this challenging time for everyone. Number five, they teach communication strategies to reduce conflict and facilitate co-parenting. And six, they also offer area resources to streamline the first five points.
Area resources are different nonprofit organizations and churches that deal with issues such as substance abuse, family and domestic violence, behavioral health, individual couples counseling, and financial planning for the timeframe moving ahead after the divorce.
