Understanding Chickasaw Nation Tribal Courts
What happens if you’re summoned before the Chickasaw Nation Tribal Courts? Hi, I’m Oklahoma attorney Brian Glass. I was recently asked the question, what do I do if the Chickasaw Nation Tribal Court has summoned me? What do I need to do to appear there?
Firstly, there are several different reasons why you could be asked or summoned to be in front of the Chickasaw Tribal Court systems. First would be if you are a tribal member, and there was an offense on tribal land, and you were asked to come before the court to answer for that crime. The second reason would be any civil suit reason. The most common of those would be child custody or divorce action.
Legal Representation in Chickasaw Nation Courts
If you are married to or have children with someone in the Chickasaw Nation, the Chickasaw Nation could exercise jurisdiction and control over that court proceeding. To be heard on that action, you would need to appear with an attorney who has been licensed and accepted within the bar of the Chickasaw Nation. You can find those in the Chickasaw Bar registration.
I have recently been accepted into the Chickasaw Bar Nation and can practice in that court system. If you have been summoned before the Chickasaw Nation Court or have questions regarding Chickasaw Tribal Law, you can find me at ChickashaLawyer.com.
