Start with a Petition!
Video Transcribed: How do you file for divorce in the state of Oklahoma?
Hi, I’m Brian Glass, a Chickasha lawyer with Wirth Law Office. Today we’re talking about the first steps you take when filing for divorce. The first thing you’re going to want to do is to draft a petition for the dissolution of marriage. You can either draft this yourself or you can hire an attorney to do so.
Within the body of this petition, you will address several matters. The first of which will be child custody and child support. That is if there are children in the marriage. The next thing you’re going to want to address is property. This is both personal property and real property.
First, you’ll address personal property. This will be categorized in two different ways. First, the personal property that you had prior to the marriage. And secondly, the personal property that you bought during the marriage. Same thing with the real property. Any property that you owned prior to marriage is going to be addressed differently than property acquired during the life of the marriage.
Other things that can be addressed within the body of the petition are alimony, spousal support, and attorney’s fees. If you’re going through a divorce or have questions about divorce, feel free to contact me, an Oklahoma divorce attorney. You can find me at chickashalawyer.com.
